Mathematics
Statement of Intent
At Smithy Bridge, we believe all pupils can achieve in mathematics; we do not accept that ‘some children cannot do Mathematics’ or that children should be limited by prior attainment. Mathematics is for everyone! Through our mastery approach, using Power Maths, we value the importance of children having a high quality Mathematics curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable. We provide our children with a variety of mathematical opportunities, which will enable them to make the connections needed to establish a greater depth in their learning. We are focused on ensuring children are confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks and to fully develop independent learners with inquisitive minds who have secure mathematical foundations and an interest in self-improvement. We aim that when faced with challenges in new and unusual contexts, children will think independently and persevere, remembering that mistakes are part of learning.
The Power Maths approach enables children to be numerate, creative, independent, inquisitive, enquiring and confident. Our mastery curriculum promotes a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject, in order that children become fluent in calculations; possess a growing confidence to reason mathematically and develop and explore their problem-solving skills. Power Maths uses the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to further embed factual, conceptual and procedural fluency.
Our daily arithmetic practice throughout the school, supports our mastery approach. Through this daily practice, children will have fluent knowledge and understanding of the number system with the ability to rapidly recall number facts, which in turn will aid them in performing written and mental calculations efficiently.
